Swordtail fish (Xiphophorous hellerii) are a very popular species of home aquarium. They are peaceful in nature and easy to care ,for this reason these is one of the best choice for beginers. They have quite unique types of fins with a great variety of colors.They live in groups, but not a schooling fish.
Tank Size: The minimum tank size for swordtail fish should be at least 15-gallons.
Water Condition : They are tropical fish that can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures (64⁰ – 82⁰Fahrenheit). Also they prefer hard water (12–30 dGH ) and pH any where in between 7.0 – 8.4.
You can added little salt in the water of about 1-1.25 teaspoon per gallon of water.
Water Region: Middle – These fish will swim in all areas of the aquarium, but mostly in the middle.
Water Changes: water changes of 30% every 5 – 7 days, or more often with heavily-stocked tanks.
Diet : This fish is an omnivore and they will accept a wide variety of foods. You can give them Flake Food, Micro Pellet and Live or frozen Food like brine shrimps, blood worms, daphnia etc.
Swordtail fish eat a high vegetable component and lot of algae in their natural habitat.
You can feed your swordtails babies 2 to 3 times in a day but don’t feed excessive food at a time
Basically growth for swordtail fry is slow. If you want them to grow faster, change the water frequently and provide a good quantity of food.
